Amelia du Pont was the eldest child of Victor du Pont (1767-1827) and Gabrielle Josephine de La Fite de Pelleport du Pont (1770-1837). Her marriage to William H. Clifford in 1812 was later annulled by an act of the General Assembly of Delaware. Margaretta Elizabeth Lammot was a daughter of Daniel Lammot (1782-1877) and Susan Parham Beck Lammot (1786-1817) of Philadelphia. In 1824, she married Alfred Victor du Pont, a son of Eleuthère Irénée du Pont and Sophie Madeleine Dalmas du Pont. Alfred V. du Pont joined the family firm of E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Company in 1818 and eventually became senior partner. He resigned from the firm in 1850. Dorcas Montgomery Van Dyke was the daughter of Nicholas Van Dyke (1769-1826) and Mary Van Lekvenigh Van Dyke (1768-1831) of New Castle, Del. The Van Dyke male family members were active in government, with Nicholas Van Dyke serving in both the state and federal government. He was a member of the U.S. Senate from 1817-1826.
